SEAI have announced that they will offer up to €3,500 off the cost of purchasing and installing a heat pump system. Heat pumps are a great alternative to burning fossil fuels which also help reduce your heating bills. It is now more affordable than ever to switch to a heat pump system.
Grant applications open Mid-April and are available to all homeowners, including landlords, whose homes were built and occupied before 2011.

What are the Challenges Ireland faces in becoming a low carbon economy?
Ireland has many challenges to become a low carbon economy. If we want to reduce greenhouse gases and meet our 2020 targets then we need to start acting. Under the current Under the current scheme we are going to struggle to meet the targets. This latest EPA report is shocking to read when we have real solutions to help reduce our carbon emissions.
Allow transport companies to place photovoltaic systems on their vast roof space. Allow their carbon credits on every Kwh produced. This can offset their carbon emissions. The surplus electricity can be be exported on the low voltage side of their local network transformer and distributed throughout the industrial estate where they are located.
This should not cause any major problems for the ESB network as the surplus of electricity can be distributed on the low voltage side of the network. These projects can be widespread throughout Europe and are a great success for the producers.
Much the same can be applied to the farming community as they also have large roof space available and are large users of electricity. The distribution of the surplus is a little harder to solve but there is also a system available now to store and release the electricity in a very efficient manner.
A special (FIT) feed in tariff to allow a payment for every Kwh produced will encourage the farming community to develop their systems.
These two developments might seen simplistic in there views but there large area of roof space that is unused now would create a large amount of electricity.
These systems have a great advantage over wind as they require little maintenance and with improvement and efficiency in panels now are rated at 300 watt each.
PV systems can now be erected on buildings as the roof structure itself would out the need for cladding as a sealed roof. This could reduce the cost of expensive roofs on these buildings.
The root cause of emissions in residential property is heating. With the development of heat pumps for Residential heating the introduction of inverter driven compressor can now produce heat at a fraction of the running costs.
Hot water production has also moved on from old traditional solar systems.
